పోయిన చలికాలం అనుకుంటా, ప్రపంచికంలో గొప్ప గొప్పోలొస్తున్నారని, ఏడనో దేశంలో పేద్ద పేద్ద కాలేజీల్లో ఎకనామిక్స్ డిగ్రీలు ఎలగబెడుతున్న పిల్లకాయల్ని తోలుకొచ్చారు, తోలుకొచ్చినోళ్ళు ఊరుకోకుండా ఓ గదిలో ఏసి వేసి, ఎవరో పెద్ద పిల్లకాయని పైన కూకో బెట్టి ఎకనామిక్స్లో మేథమేటిక్స్ అవసరమా అనవసరమా అని ఒక టాపిక్ ఇచ్చి కొట్టుకోమన్నారు.. బాగా ఇంగిలిపీసు వచ్చిన పిల్ల, సూపర్ మ్యాన్ టీషర్ట్ వేసుకొచ్చి, అసలు లెక్కలు ఎకనామిక్స్ బ్యూటీని సెడగొట్టేస్తున్నాయి, తలకమాసినోళ్ళు అందరూ కలిసి అనవసరంగా లెఖ్ఖలు ఐనదానికీ కానిదానికీ మాదుంప తెంచేస్తున్నారు, అసలు కీన్స్ దీన్నే

అని అన్నాడు, అసలు ఎకనోమెట్రిక్స్ మోడలింగ్ ఎంత బాగుంటుంది, అసలు దానిమీద పని చేసినందుకే చాలా మందికి నోబుల్ ప్రైజులు వచ్చాయి, లెఖ్ఖలు, నాశనం చేయడానికి తప్ప ఇంక దేనికీ పనికిరావు అని తేల్చింది.

పాపం పైన కుర్సీలో కుర్చున్నాయాన బాగా ఇంప్రెస్ అయ్యి ఏమి ఇవ్వాలో తెలియక, చేతి వాచీ తీసి ఇచ్చాడు, తన ఫేవరెట్ ఎకనామిస్ట్ జాన్ న్యాష్ అని సదరు శాల్తీ చెప్పి, అతనితో ముఖాముఖీ కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గొనే అవకాశం ఇవ్వమని అర్ధించారు, సాధించారు..

స్టాటిస్టిక్స్, ఎకనామెట్రిక్స్ సరిపోతుందా, ఇంకేమీ అక్కర్లేదా ఎకనామిక్స్లో.

అసలు మేథమేటిక్స్ అంటే ఏమిటి? మేథమేటిక్స్ అంటే ఒక భాష, అది వొద్దు, మాకు సైగలే బాగున్నాయి అంటే వాడ్ని పిచ్చోడే అనుకుంటాను నేను అని గిబ్బ్స్ అన్నాడు గుర్తులేదా అని పాల్ (కె.యె. పాల్ కాదులేండి) చెప్పాడు కదా, వీళ్ళు ఏమిటి మాట రాని మౌనమిది అనే పాట పాడుకుంటున్నారు?

మ్యాప్ లో నాకు ఇంచ్ బై ఇంచ్ దిటేయిల్స్ కావాలి అనేటోడ్ని ఏమంటాం (ఇంచ్ బై ఇంచ్ కావాలి అంటే వెళ్ళి చూడక మ్యాప్ ఎందుకో?)

మేథమేటికల్ మోడల్‌కి, మేథమేటిక్స్కి, ఎకనామిక్స్లో మేథమేటిక్స్కి, బిహెవియరల్ సైన్సెస్లో మేథమేటిక్స్ ఎంప్లాయబిలిటికీ తేడాలు తెలియకుండా మాట్లాడితే వాచీ ఇచ్చేస్తారా?

మరి ఎకనామిక్స్లో కాసెప్ట్స్ ఎలా డెవలప్ అయ్యాయి, ఎన్నో క్లిస్టమైన సమస్యలకి సులువైన పరిష్కారం చూపించే గేం థీరీ ఎందుకువాడుకుంటున్నారు? అదేంటో కీన్స్‌ని ఆ విషయంలో తప్పు అని ప్రువ్ చేసిన నాష్ తనకి ఇష్టం ఐన ఎకనామిస్ట్ ఏల అయ్యాడు?

అసలు ఎకనామెట్రిక్స్ అంటే, మేథమేటికల్లీ ట్రైండ్ స్టాటిస్టిక్స్ అనే పేరు కదా, ఎకనామెట్రిక్స్ కాన్సెప్ట్స్ పృవ్ఫ్స్ లీనియర్ ఆల్జీబ్రలో దొరుకుతాయెందుకో? Jan Tinbergen డైనమిక్ మోడల్ మేథమేటికల్ మోడల్ కాదా? అసలు మోడల్ అంటే ఏమిటి? పైన మేథమేటిక్స్ వలన వచ్చే అవలక్షణాలు ఈ మోడల్లో లేవా?

Understanding the nature and role of mathematical economics is not the same as understanding the connection between mathematics and economics.

Mathematical economics is the employment of mathematics in economics itself. Explaining or justifying mathematical economics often involves essentialist arguments concerning the true nature of economic objects, and the true nature of the economy, as well as arguments suggesting that employing mathematics is appropriate since the underlying “economy” is quantitative in nature. ఇంకొకాయనెవరో ఇలా ఎందుకు సెప్పాడు.
The history of economics involves a history of not only the development of economic knowledge, but the development and changes in images of economic knowledge: what constitutes the economy, what constitutes a good explanation in economics, what constitutes serious empirical work in economics, what is a good model, etc?

ఇవి ఏమీ తెలియకుండా ఆయన పైన ఎలా కుర్సున్నాడు? ఎదేదో వాగేసిన పిల్లకి జాన్ నాష్‌తో ముఖాముఖీ అవకాశం ఎలా వచ్చింది?

ఇది శ్రీలంకలో జరిగింది, అక్కడ ఉన్నవారు చెప్పిన దాన్ని బట్టి, నా ఆలోచనలు కలిపి రాసుకున్నాను, ఇంకొంచం వివరంగా రాద్దామనిపించినా ఇలా కానిచ్చేశాను. (ఇది జరిగింది 3-4 ఏళ్ళు క్రితం అనుకుంటాను.)
ఆ అమ్మాయికి నాష్ డిల్లీ వచ్చినప్పుడు ప్రత్యేకంగా సమయం కేటాయించినా, ఆయన నోరు విప్పి మాట్లాడలేదట, ఈ అమ్మాయి చెప్పినవి కుడా విన్నాడో వినలేదో తెలియదు అని చెప్పింది, కానీ తాను అన్నీ వింటాను అవతలి వాడు ఎదో తెలిసీ తెలియకుండా మాట్లాడుతుంటే జవాబివ్వను అని నాష్ ఎదో ఇంటర్వ్యూలో చెప్పాడని ఎవరో అన్నారు..


If the important lesson from mathematics in the first third of the nineteenth century was
that economics needed to become a deductive science (as geometry was), in the late nineteenth
century the lesson from mathematics was that economics needed to model itself on rational
mechanics. Over the first two thirds of the twentieth century the lesson was that economics was
to become scientific by grounding its models and theories on a modest set of axioms concerning
pure economic agents’ preferences and choices. But beginning nearly at mid-century,
mathematics was re-imagining itself as a discipline that historically had developed by solving
real problems presented to it from other sciences. And in a similar fashion, and partially in
response to that changing image of mathematical knowledge, the notion of a serious economic
science, connected to data-based reasoning, was reshaping the idea of rigorous argumentation in
economics. Econometrics and applied microeconomics were to form the reconstructed core of
economic science much as work in algorithmics and applied mathematics were re-commanding
attention in the mathematics community. “At the Berlin International Congress of
Mathematicians in August 1998, the old opposition between the pure and the applied—still
widely shared in the community—has been formulated in quite different terms: ‘mathematicians
who build models versus those who prove theorems.’ [Mumford, 1998]. But the respect enjoyed
by the former is now definitely as high as that of the latter.” (Dalmedico, 2001, 249) So too in
economics, as the prestige accorded “good work” in applied economics now rivals that accorded
to work in pure theory.
